Galveston is well on the way to be a world-class destination with the May 2012 opening of the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, a brand- new attraction built on the site of the city's his- toric pier. The new pier is a project of Landry's, the national restaurant, hospitality and entertain- ment company. "The City of Galveston's commitment to en- hancing our Seawall experience has now been improved upon by one of Galveston's own," said Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski. "Galveston is proud to witness Landry's historic investment in recreating the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. Galveston is back and better than ever, and the Seawall is leading the way." According to statements, Landry's envisions the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier be- coming a preferred family destination on par with Chicago's Navy Pier, Santa Monica Pier and Coney Island's Luna Park. The $60 million project will have a retail center, a 350-seat Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant, entertainment stages, food courts, and 16 rides, including a double-decker carousel, 100-foot-tall Ferris Wheel, a steel roller coaster with a 100-foot ver- tical climb, classic bumper cars for adults and children, and a 200-foot-tall swing recog- nized as the highest ride in Texas.
Meg Winchester, director of the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) said the pier would be another great amenity for groups meeting in Galveston. "We are so excited to add this to our repertoire of attractions on the island. This will be a great off-site location for entertainment as well as a great amenity to fami- lies traveling with the meeting attendee." Located about 50 miles from Houston, Galve-
ston offers more than many other beach destina- tions, Winchester noted. "In addition to the beach, Galveston is different than other island destinations because it offers so many opportuni- ties for off-site events and entertaining, including historic Victorian mansions, unique museums and a variety of major attractions, including an indoor/outdoor water park and Moody Gardens." Winchester also announced that the city
now offers an iPhone app for navigating the destination.
