Visitors can walk the streets of John Brown's day and stand in the very building in which he and his raiders sought refuge. The influence of the railroads can also be seen and felt for the signif- icant role the rails played in the control of the town. A view from one of the three surrounding mountaintops offers a glimpse of why this loca- tion was sought after by both the Union and the Confederacy. New River Gorge As West Virginia's smaller version of the Grand Canyon, New River Gorge is 900 feet deep, offering world-class rock climbing on its Endless Wall, whitewater rafting, and an abundance of natural beauty and waterfalls along the New River, which runs through it. Visitors can intro- duce themselves to these surrounding by driving across the 3,030-foot New River Gorge Bridge, the highest steel-arch bridge in the Western hemisphere. The river is located near the town of Fayetteville, recognized as one of the Coolest Small Towns in America. In the city, groups will find historic sites and homes, as well as a wide variety of stores and restaurants. Tamarack A first stop for any group wanting to experience the culture, art and cuisine of West Virginia in one location is Tamarack. Located just off the West Virginia Turnpike (I-77), the cultural cen- ter draws half a million visitors to its retail show- case of hand crafts, fine art and regional cuisine. Groups can enjoy first-class dining, opportunities to view and purchase regional art and wine, and special events that include everything from cooking classes to live bluegrass performances. A 12,000-square-foot conference center is also available on the grounds. n West Virginia is the real deal when it comes to authentic natural experiences. Completely encapsulated in the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the state offers endless outdoor recreation and sightseeing experiences. The capital city of Charleston serves as the gateway to all that is wild and wonderful in the Mountain State: snow skiing, world-class zip-line tours, whitewater rafting, ATV trails, golfing, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking to name more than a few. The small state packs a punch in terms of hospitality offerings, as well laying claim to The Greenbrier, America's resort since 1778.
