It only seems natural that the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) would reside in this historical city located near the first White House of the Confederacy and the Alabama State Capitol. History buffs will appreciate this records hub detailing family genealogy as well as muse- um exhibits that display the state's journey through time. A historical artifact unto itself, ADAH is the oldest state-funded archive in the United States. Groups can tour the museum exhibits, displaying more than 800 artifacts, multiple audiovi- sual programs and hundreds of doc- uments and pictures that detail the history of Alabama starting from the first settlers of the state to the Space Race. For those who want a historical experience, ADAH will not disappoint. Space Technology Groups with a taste for the final frontier will get a unique glimpse into what some bill the "Earth's largest space museum": the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. The center brings to life the fascinating history of the Space Race and showcases a rare col- lection of rockets and space relics – one of the most extensive collec- tions in the world. For groups that want to experience the excitement of microgravity, scuba diving ses- sions simulating space's weightless environment are available. Tours often conclude with a visit to the Biergarten, bringing visitors back down to Earth with authentic German food and beers. Coastal Exploration Five Rivers, Alabama's Delta Resource Center, sits at the conver- gence of five major rivers: Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee and Blakeley. Five Rivers is an excellent way to entertain without having to break out the big bucks. Hiking trails are available for the avid nature lover and an abundance of picnic pavilions and tables are located throughout the area for outdoor lunches and receptions. Groups can take advantage of tours around the delta via boat or, for the adventurous, canoe and kayak rent- als are available. Inside 5 Rivers, the Apalachee Exhibit Hall and Little Bateau Learning Center are great ways for adults and children to learn more about the ecosystems and environment of this natural resource. n City Map Location Page Alabama Gulf Coast Foley ............................................B8 ........................... 7 Gulf Shores ..................................B8 ........................... 7 Orange Beach ..............................B8 ........................... 7 Auburn/Opelika ...............................
