Established by George Washington Vanderbilt II, grandson of the railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, the estate wows groups that find it big in both size and offerings. Biltmore is home to a host of outdoor activities such as horseback riding, hiking, biking, carriage rides and much more over its 8,000-acre backyard. An on-site winery and tasting room is also popular with visitors. Groups can take part in specialty tours to learn about pairing some of the hand- crafted wines with chocolate and cheese. Some may choose to take the exclusive vine tour to the vine- yards and then on to the production tour. The Biltmore also provides a beautiful backdrop for hiking the grounds on trails that wend through beautiful gardens, lush for- ests and placid meadows. While it commonly takes a large part of the day to tour the grand house, estate winery and stunning grounds, the destination's more than one million annual visitors find it is well worth the time. Military Museum Admission is free at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, a self-guided museum located in the heart of Fayetteville. The museum explores the history of special oper- ations from the concep- tion of paratroopers to today's special operations units. Visitors will learn about the early airborne days and the eventual involvement of special ops in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and Cold War, as well as con- tingency operations and training regiments. The museum also sells tickets for their "Army on the Move" and "Experience the Legend" simulators that put guests right in the action of spe- cial operations. River Journey Dan River is a great place for canoeing and kayak- ing, and the Dan River Company is ready to help. Located one hour from Greensboro and right next to Hanging Rock State Park, the company provides qual- ity canoes and kayaks, as well as shuttles visitors to and from the start and end of their river journey. The river, which runs almost six miles, has exciting dips and pristine lulls for a varied sightseeing trip. After a day of rowing, the Green Heron Club is available for weary travelers on Fridays and weekends, showcasing local bands and plenty of spirits. n North Carolina has a lot of "firsts" in the record books: the first airplane flight, the first public university, the first profes- sional home run by Babe Ruth. There are also many reasons why the state is often a "first" on the list of destinations for groups and events. From the beauty and recreational oppor- tunities of the Great Smoky Mountains to the progressive, upscale offerings of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, the state is alive with hospitality options and entertainment.
