onventionSouth is proud to The AWARDS Issue! D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7 ⎜ ConventionSouth ⎜ w w w . c o n v e n t i o n s o u t h . c o m 11 It is and honor and a privilege to present the ConventionSouth 2017 Readers' Choice Awards, which are listed in spotlighted boxes throughout this issue. This year's winners include convention centers, hotels and special event venues, as well as convention and visitors bureaus throughout the South. After more than 6,000 readers and fans voted, this is our elite list of the top 300 meeting sites and destinations in the South. "We received a record level of input from ConventionSouth readers and fans in determining this year's top meeting sites and meeting organizations in the South," said ConventionSouth Publisher J. Talty O'Connor. "The prestigious recognition is all the more valuable because it comes from top meet- ing professionals from throughout the United States who hold events in the South." To annually identify the South's top venues, we ask meeting professionals to nominate the meeting sites that they believe have provided exemplary service for meetings and events held during the cur- rent year. The nominated sites are then compiled and placed on an online ballot where meeting pro- fessionals and those associated with the meetings industry are asked to vote for the best of the best. Congratulations to this year's winners! onventionSouth is proud to announce our Meeting Pro- fessionals To Watch in 2018. These individuals were nom- inated by their industry peers for their skills and experience. Their involve- ment in organizing and conducting meetings and events demonstrates the creativity and tenacity required to achieve results. Addition- ally, the variety of gatherings they manage —from award galas to themed special events to educational training to board of director re- treats—is representative of the wide range of areas that the meetings industry encompasses. In a departure from previous years, Convention South is dedicating part of our awards issue to those in the industry who have dealt with an unusually difficult hurricane season, which affected many areas of the South. Our Special Honors section seeks to show appreciation for and shine a spotlight on the people and places that were impacted by this year's storms, and to learn from them about ways to effectively prepare for extreme weather events, keep their employees safe, provide refuge for evacuees (if needed) and establish lines of command and communication during and after the storms hit. Thanks to the efforts of these individuals and their staffs, most Southern destinations that were affected by the 2017 hurricane season are back in business or on their way to recovery. In keeping with tradition, we also spotlight a select group of meeting planners who have been highly recommended for applying their organizational talents, creative ideas and hard work to the monumental task of arranging meetings and events that engage participants while also achieving the goals of the organiza- tion, whether that goal is educational training, social interaction, building leadership skills, or all of the above. In sharing some of the details of their experiences, these individuals provide insights into the many different roles and responsibilities involved in being a suc- cessful planner. Additionally, this awards issue includes a salute to industry standouts. These industry leaders have received accolades from specific segments of the meetings and events industry for demonstrating excellence, providing out- standing customer service and contributing innovative ideas and approaches to making events effective and memorable. n C THE 2017 READERS' CHOICE AWARDS Alabama .............................................................14 Arkansas.............................................................16 Florida.................................................................22 Georgia ...............................................................28 Kentucky ............................................................29 Louisiana ............................................................30 Maryland ............................................................36 Mississippi .........................................................38 Missouri ..............................................................44 North Carolina ..................................................50 Oklahoma ..........................................................53 South Carolina ..................................................54 Tennessee ..........................................................56 Texas ...................................................................64 Virginia ...............................................................70 West Virginia .....................................................72 See this year's award winners listed by state on the following pages: HONORING THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS
