Virginia's Hampton Roads Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay and the James River, youʼll find the Virginia cites of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News and Williamsburg—collectively known as Hampton Roads. The historical significance of this region is great. In 1607, the Virginia Company arrived in region and established the first permanent English colony in North Amer- ica. And, opportunities to experience colonial history abound there. And so itʼs likely no surprise that preservation is a key theme in Hampton Roads. Groups may take part in various social responsibility and voluntourism opportunities, and there are several Virginia Green-certified hotels and venues. The Virginia Beach CVB recently showed meeting planners firsthand how groups can "give back" through a FAM tour where participants prepared hygiene kits that were donated to those in need. ■ Hampton Roads' History On The Big Screen Plan a movie night and view "The New World" with Colin Ferrel and Christian Bale. The flick depicts the convergence of European and Native American cultures during the founding of the Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. The movie brings to life the classic tale of Pocahontas and her relationships with adventurer John Smith and aristocrat John Rolfe. ■ 34 ConventionSouth JUNE 2012
