Myrtle Beach In Myrtle Beach, groups can "create their own experience," said Myrtle Beach Area CVB Director of Sales Danna Lilly, noting that the beach city and the South Car- olinaʼs entire Grand Strand region has "something for every group—from budget- friendly, family-oriented resorts to upscale, Four-Star properties and quiet retreats." Itʼs also a destination where groups will soon be able to get to with better ease as officials are planning on cutting the red ribbon to the new Myrtle Beach Interna- tional Airport in January. The facility is being expanded to double its current size. Officials in Myrtle Beach are also working on a plan to build an amphitheatre adjacent to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center (MBCC). If built, the development of the land would open up the convention center area to Broadway at the Beach, a large-scale entertainment district. The MBCC and the adjacent Sheraton offer a "complete convention connection," said Lisa Stringer, director of sales and market- ing for the hotel. Myrtle Beach International Airport is being expanded and redesigned as seen in this rendering. The city now has a new beachfront boardwalk and ferris wheel. The Oceanfront Boardwalk provides a 1.2 mile-long sectioned walkway with promenades for group gatherings and access to piers as well as dining options. The new SkyWheel Myrtle Beach, located alongside the boardwalk, is also home to Jimmy Buffetʼs Landshark Bar and Grill, an observation deck, a gift shop and evening light shows. ■ 46 ConventionSouth SEPTEMBER 2012 www.con v entionsouth.com C ourtesyVisitMyrtleBeachvi aFacebook/KayB.
