According to the bi-annual Global Construction Pipeline Trend Report issued by Lodging Econometrics (LE) in September, hotel con- struction has been ascending for more than four years and reached record highs in 2018. The report states that there are 12,839 hotel projects underway worldwide which will add more than 2 million guest rooms to the global inventory. This is an all-time high, according to the LE report, with hotel construction up by 86 percent over the low point in hotel construction, established in 2011. The United States has the greatest number of hotel construction projects (5,312 projects/634,501 rooms) accounting for 41 percent of the total global construc- tion pipeline. In addition to New York City, Dallas, with 156 projects/18,908 rooms, and Houston, with 150 projects/16,321 rooms, are among the 10 cities worldwide that are experiencing the highest rates of hotel construction. At the same time, hotels around the world are reno- vating, expanding and upgrading their properties, with numerous projects underway in the southern United States. Sometimes referred to as "reimaginings," these projects not only seek to provide a fresher look and incorporate newer technology, but also to re-arrange public spaces, including lobbies, meeting rooms and recreational facilities, so that they are more open and interactive. The properties featured in this article offer a sam- pling of the South's new and renovated hotels and some of the trends they are incorporating. TREND: Embracing The Arts Art Ovation Hotel (Sarasota, Fla.) Newly opened in April, Art Ovation Hotel offers a unique experience with creative amenities such as in- room instruments, origami lessons, IMPROV comedy lessons, surprise pop-up acts like hip hop dances, Artists in Residence programs, and Project Sketchbook, where guests can leave behind a piece of their creativity in leather-bound sketchbooks. The property also boasts a chic rooftop pool and bar, a full-service restaurant and 10,000 square feet of meeting space. ► Art Ovation Hotel
