Building Relationships & Reconnecting In September, I attended an event at a small brewery where a band was debuting its first album. Two of the band members are good friends with my son, and I have known them since they were in elementary school. It was a night of reconnection with a number of people I had not seen in some time as well as a celebration of an important milestone and what better way to enjoy this occasion than dancing to their lively tunes while sipping locally-made brews? In October, I took part in a wonderful group relationship-building event aboard an historic schooner, sailing from Key West through the straits of Florida while tasting wines and sampling hors d'oeuvres. I met people from several regions of the country and we shared stories from our lives as we cruised through a beautiful sunset, aided by a perfect sea breeze and a sound system that offered tunes well-suited to the setting. Both of those experiences, as well as many others I've been fortunate to enjoy over the past year, speak to the opportunity to build new relationships and reconnect with people while participating in a group event. They also point to the role of music as an ice-breaking mech- anism and bonding agent because, in each case, the music got people talking, moving and sometimes singing along. This issue's feature on golf, recreation and relationships offers a number of examples of the ways that groups can build strong bonds through a variety of recreational activities, both fun and challenging. Additionally, we take a look at the role of music in elevating meetings while also presenting 10 Hot Southern Soundscapes where the local music scene helps attract attendees and provides the perfect backdrop for special events. On a sadder note, the South has just added Michael to the list of names associated with devastating hurricanes, even as the region has not yet fully recovered from Florence. It's been a very difficult hurricane season and our hearts go out to those in Panama City Beach, Mexico Beach and other destinations in the path of Hurricane Michael, who are now dealing with the aftermath. We are also mindful that destinations along the Carolina coasts and others in the path of Hurricane Florence are still working hard to get things as back to normal as possible. But just as we on the northern Gulf Coast are familiar with storm damage, we are also well aware of the strength and resilience of people throughout this region and we look forward to sharing information about the rebuilding and rebirth of all areas affected by this year's storms in the near future. perspective putting it in Senior Editor Convention South EXECUTIVE OFFICES 2001 West First Street Gulf Shores, AL 36542 MAILING ADDRESS P.O.
