Otherwise, teams may walk away less than bonded. Here are some Do's and Don'ts from seasoned hospitality professionals: Kevin Rosa, Director of Sales & Marketing, Chateau Elan Winery & Resort We like to do random team selection to sep- arate close colleagues and make the playing field more even. We can also get insight from the planner about the attendees prior to their stay to determine personalities and switch up the usual routine. Sales meeting attendees will respond very differently to a competition-based event than customers. • Consider the timeline. Many team-building/ competitive activities require at least 3 to 4 hours to complete, especially with a large number of attendees. • Make sure that you have the right amount of space (meeting or outdoor) to comfortably complete the activity. • Don't: Assume since an event worked well for one group that it will automatically work well for another group. We consider age, gender and job descriptions of attendees to help home in on the right competitive activity for the group. It is important that the staff administering the event gives clear instructions and interacts with the group. The more fun the staff has interacting with the team, the more successful the event is. That said, there is a fine line between friendly competition and unhealthy/all-encompassing competition. When planning a team building competition, make sure to lighten the atmo- sphere and have fun, Lighthearted "awards" are the way to go for the winning team. Make sure to stay away from high-stakes awards such as extra PTO, money prizes or special perks back at the office. These tend to take the fun out of working together as a team and can lead to an- imosity between winning and losing teams. We believe the most successful team building ac- tivities are the ones where your group has fun and learns something about each other. n -Selena Chavis GOLF, RECREATION & RELATIONSHIPS Where the Champions Compete Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen Area Groups seeking to arrange golf tournaments on some of the most revered courses in the U.S. will find a wealth of options at the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen Area of North Carolina, also known as the Home of American Golf™. According to Beverly Stew- art, vice president of sales at the CVB, the area offers 2,840 hotel rooms and 40 legendary courses, many of which can be used for group tournaments with the assistance of the CVB. In this area, which Golf Digest has cited as "one of the top three golf destinations in the world," meeting participants can check out the links where the legends of golf have played. Many of the highest-level competitions, such as the U.S. Amateur Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, the U.S. Women's Open Championship and Ryder Cup Matches have taken place here. Earlier this year the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced that the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines has been selected as the host site for the 77th U.S. Women's Open in 2022, making it the first course to host the champi- onship four times. "We are thrilled to bring another U.S. Women's Open to one of the most respected courses in the United States," said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. "Three great USGA champions have conquered the ultimate test in women's golf at Pine Needles, and we look forward to adding the 77th U.S. Women's Open champion to that illustrious list." To stay on top as a golf destination, area courses are often upgraded. Pine Needles, opened in 1928, was renovated in 2004 and again in 2016. In September, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club unveiled a reimagined No. 4 course, designed by golf course architect Gil Hanse, where exposed sand areas, vast cross bunkers and native wire grass meld with the site's rolling topography and natural ridge lines to create dramatic vistas and strategic options on every hole. "We've returned the original landscape to the course, and from there, we then created the features, slopes and green locations," said Hanse. "We believe golfers are going to appre- ciate how No. 4 fits into the Pinehurst lineup and elevates the entire golf experience."
