"High Point's Furniture Heritage exhibit examines the history of the relationship between the furniture industry and the people of High Point, focusing attention on the furniture industry as a key element of the city's growth and prosperity," said Nancy Bowman, marketing and communications manager for the High Point CVB. "It offers a unique perspective on the history of our area, with interactive elements, video, photographs, memorabilia, machinery and furniture." High Point is dubbed the "Home Furniture Capital of the World" and twice-yearly, hosts the High Point Furniture Market. The 500,000-square-foot Show- place facility hosts much of the activity. The event "lets our world-class service shine throughout every accommodation, restaurant and event facility," Bowman said. The Miss North Carolina USA and Miss North Carolina Teen USA pageants have returned annually to the High Point Theatre for more than a decade. "The High Point CVB is second to none," said Paula Miles, executive director of Miss North Carolina USA and Miss North Carolina Teen USA. "They make every- thing we need to do easier; it's like having an extra staff member who honestly cares about what we do." The High Point Theatre has upgraded lobby and gallery meeting spaces with new lighting and an improved sound system, said David S. Briggs, director. "What makes us unique is an amazing 960-seat auditorium, a newly designed concession area and open accommodations for caterers and meeting planners. An added value is the opportunity to house large-scale outdoor events (up to 5,000 people capacity) in the Mendenhall Terminal, located directly in front of the theater." In addition to events held at the High Point Theatre, the organization treats participants to a luncheon at High Point University. "It's a fabulous college campus and impressive to our teens who may not have decided on a college yet," Miles said. The 252-room High Point Plaza Hotel and Conference Center has 12,000 square feet of event space. "We are centrally located in downtown, we completed a major renovation, and we offer a new fitness room and business center," said Robin Moore, director of sales. The hotel offers free wireless Internet access in all public areas. ■ E D I T O R ' S HOT PICKS NORTH CAROLINA TRIAD IN-DEPTH Visit for more about the N.C.
