However, McAllen also has a great indoors. The $65 million dollar McAllen Convention Center, featuring 174,000 square feet of multifunctional space, is located on 18.5 park-like acres—close to shopping and restaurants in a growing area of McAllen. The facility fronts on an artificial lake contain- ing real fish. Inside, the building features stunning vaulted ceilings, skylights and huge windows. Laurie Pulido, sales coordinator for the facility, took me on a guided tour and says since its 2007 opening, the facility's strongest attraction for meeting planners has been its flexi- bility. "We are the largest facility in South Texas. We have hosted everything from expos to trade shows to wed- dings. We cus- tomize every reservation with our clients. Once you book, you are assigned an event coordinator who takes you from A to Z." The facility's ballroom, with 10,412 square feet of space, seats 952 and has its own private en- trance along with 4,000 square feet of prefunc- tion area. A variety of smaller meeting rooms, including two boardrooms, are available.
