JODI ADCOCK, CMP, CMM Manager, Event and Trade Show Team Texas Instruments, Inc. Dallas, Texas 18 Years In The Business Making Employees Feel Special Every year, Jodi Adcock and her event and trade show team plan a gala for employ- ees who reach 25 or more years of service in the prior year. These celebra- tions can be as "small" as 600 people or as big as 1,000 people. "We come up with a theme, we decorate to that theme, we design and make our own centerpieces, come up with a gift that utilizes our technology, and give away prizes that utilize our technology. Consistently we hear things like 'wow, I can't believe this is the same space we use for our conferences!' or 'you all always go the extra mile to make us feel very special.' The great feedback moti- vates us all to work hard to make this event the highlight of the year for the honorees. Challenges: Training new employees is a challenge because it takes a while to ramp up to our acronyms, protocols, knowing who's who, and learning the team as well. Planners are doers and everyone wants to jump in head first, which can be tough in a large company. I also am still learning how to manage people, to flex to different styles, and to manage across generations. Managing and still planning pro- grams at the same time is tough! While training, I explain my philosophy and style of training and managing to my new employee. I try to give background on the protocols and rules and regs so that everyone understands the "why" behind them. I think it helps people comply when they understand why. I meet monthly (sometimes more) with my team to stay in touch on issues unique to each person. The team meets weekly to stay on top of project workload and cross-team issues. I try to keep these things separate because the one-on-one's allow me to flex my style as needed. Rewards: I love the fact that no two days are ever the same. The variety in my career keeps it fresh day after day, year after year. I'm proud and honored to have a career that I love. I often say that I have the most fun job in the company! Adcock received high praise from Bethany Hastings, director of sales at the Plano Event Center, where she has booked space for galas, corporate leadership and annual business con- ferences involving from 150-1,000 attendees. "Jodi has a passion for her profession as an event planner. She possesses an optimis- tic, 'can do' attitude that is contagious. Her desire and ability to exceed her client's expec- tations is paramount in how she executes the event program. Her ethical standards and close attention to detail make her an exceptional event planner." JUANITA E. GAYNOR, President EABJ Consulting and Event Management Atlanta, GA 23 Years In The Business Jazzing Up The Mission Statement When Juanita Gay- nor's client wanted to find out if people attending their meeting understood the core values of their organization, she found a cre- ative way to put the question to the test. Gaynor developed a Great Gatsby Themed Treasure Hunt, using the organization's mission, goals and core values to create clues and map locations.
