Even more, an abundance of hotel options, many in Center City, make accessibility from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to meeting spaces to a night out on the town a breeze." The biggest project is the recently begun $110 million expansion of the Charlotte Convention Center (CCC), scheduled for December 2020 completion. CCC will remain open to host meet- ings in the unaffected spaces. The project calls for increased breakout space and the construction of a pedestrian bridge linking a new wing of the CCC with The Westin Charlotte's 700 rooms. In total, the expansion will increase the capacity of the existing meeting level by 50,000 square feet, adding 26,000 square feet of breakout space composed of 15 meeting rooms and 24,000 square feet of pre-function space. It will also allow for a reconfiguration of the Richardson Ballroom into four meeting rooms of 7,700 square feet each. Charlotte is also undergoing dramatic growth in hotel rooms. More than 7,700 new hotel rooms are on the books for the Charlotte region through 2022, including more than 1,500 in Center City. This year alone, nearly 1,900 are slated to open in 16 mostly smaller properties, mostly outside of downtown. The largest will be a 300-room dual property AC Hotel/Residence Inn. The 400-room Great Wolf Lodge Charlotte/ Concord northeast of Charlotte is an indoor water park resort that also provides 17,350 square feet of professional function space.
